Dubby is a browser extension that translates the audio playing in your current browser tab in real time ("dubbing"). This policy explains what data Dubby collects, processes, and shares.

Short version

Dubby does not collect, sell, or transmit your personal data to any server operated by the publisher. Translation is performed by Google's Gemini API using an API key that you provide and that is stored only on your device.

Data processed

Audio (tab audio)

• When you start dubbing, Dubby captures the audio of the tab you have selected.
• That audio is sent directly from your browser to Google's Gemini API for speech recognition and translation.
• The audio is not sent to any server controlled by the publisher.
• Recordings are created only if you explicitly enable the recording feature.

Gemini API key

• Dubby requires a Google Gemini API key, which you obtain from Google AI Studio and paste into the extension.
• The key is stored locally in your browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local).
• The key is sent directly to Google's Gemini API (generativelanguage.googleapis.com) when you use the extension.
• The key is never transmitted to the publisher or to any other server.

Translation output

Translated text (captions) and translated audio are delivered back from Google's Gemini API to your browser and played or displayed locally.

Local usage statistics

Dubby stores a summary of your usage (for example duration, target language, and date) locally on your device so it can show you a "Usage stats" page. This data is not transmitted to any server.

Third-party services

Google Gemini (Google LLC)

Dubby uses the Gemini Live API for translation. When you use Dubby, your tab audio, the resulting transcriptions, and your API key are shared with Google in accordance with Google's Generative AI Terms of Service and Google's Privacy Policy. Please review Google's policies for how they process this data.

Data retention

• Audio sent to Gemini for a live session is used in real time and is not retained by Dubby.
• Your API key and local usage stats remain on your device until you remove the extension or clear the data.

Permissions

• tabCapture — reads the audio of the tab you choose, so it can be translated.
• storage — stores your API key and settings locally.
• downloads (optional) — only if you use the recording feature to save audio or subtitle files.
• scripting / activeTab — used to show subtitles on the page you are watching.

How to use Dubby

1. Install Dubby from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to your toolbar.
2. Open any video or audio tab (for example YouTube) and press play.
3. Click the Dubby icon, choose your target language, and press Start.
4. Hear the translated voice over the video. Toggle Dubbed audio and Subtitles from the popup.
5. While dubbing, press Record audio & subtitles to save a session; press it again to save MP3/VTT files to your Downloads.
